Bedford Pub Crawl
On this page, posts will be made regarding pubs in Bedford that I like. Bedford, when I first moved here in 2000, was suffering badly from a distinct lack of decent boozers. The only thing that pubs seemed to serve, other than The Welly - more about that place later - was Directors or Abbott, neither of which I particularly like. Recently they have been upping their game and the decision by Young's to move their operations to Bedford has certainly helped: you can now get their ordinary and Special as well as Gold and London Stout (if you fancy a change from Guinness) in a lot of Bedford's pubs.
First up - The Devvie
The Devonshire Arms - 32 Dudley St, Bedford MK40 3TB
I'm going to start with The Devonshire Arms. Recently - well, a few years ago now, I suppose, and after falling somewhat into the doldrums and even being closed for a while, The Devvie re-opened and is now a proper little gem. It has become your archetypal local for the lucky sods who liv around Dudley Street. It has a warm atmosphere and a good choice of beers being one of those pubs that have benefitted from the introduction of Young's to the area. No fruit machines, a small telly for those important games .... fireplace, subtle lighting and candles ... does food in the way of pies. Oh, and a nice little garden.

Second up - The Gordon Arms
Gordon Arms - 118 Castle Road, Bedford MK40 3QY
The Gordon Arms is just around the corner from The Devvie, on Castle Road. I haven't been there for a while now. Oooh, at least 3 weeks. Well, a bit longer. Quite a nice pub but a bit Castle Road trendy .... and perhaps not as good as it thinks it is. But, hey, these things are always up for debate. More one to be seen in, I think, but none the less a decent selection of beers, some of them comfy sofa things that some pubs like to have - and they do food too tho I've never eaten there .... and I suppose I should mention that it also has the Ent Shed attached - a music/comedy/room for hire place .......
Try http://www.entshed.co.uk for more details but the websites about this place are a bit confusing ...
The Three Cups
The Three Cups, 45 Newnham St, Bedford MK40 3JR
The Three Cups. Not one I go in much and I'm not sure why. Good beer, good people .... just find the interior a bit bland. I know they put on a bit of music once in a while. Good food, too, apparently. Guess it's because I'm on my way to The Castle ....

The Castle
The Castle, 17 Newnham St, Bedford MK40 3JR
Another gem - good beer being another one that's now selling Young's. Always a few in and open all day, unlike the Devvy. Pop in here after work on a Friday to start the weekend off and a great place to start it off it is too. Friendly but it can get a bit crowded being a bit on the small side. Good food and they do rooms, too. The garden (being a smoker I tend to spend some time outside) is neat and a shelter with heaters you can actually feel .....

The Ship
The Ship, 7 St. Cuthbert's St, Bedford, Bedfordshire MK40 3JB
Just around the corner from The Castle and the place to be seen for people of a certain age. It's a nice enough place and a great garden. A bit hit and miss with the beers ... sometimes they have a good selection but they seem to be forever running out.
The back bar gets very, very busy on weekend nights ... a bit too full of rugger buggers and women with too much make up for my taste but definitely worth a visit at less busy times.
The Wellington
The Wellington Arms. 40-42 Wellington Street Bedford Bedfordshire MK402JX.
I have mixed feelings about The Wellington - loads of good beers and a good, friendly atmosphere but the staff seem to take pleasure in serving their regulars ahead of serving people they don't know which I find personally very bloody annoying .....
It shouldn't stop anyone giving it a try but I can't remember the last time I went there for that very reason ..... don't expect they're worried about that though. Usually pretty busy and a nice quirky feel to the place ......
